India and Pakistan have agreed to implement a complete and immediate ceasefire from 5 pm on May 10, 2025. A ceasefire is an agreement under which the parties involved in a war or an armed conflict agree to stop fighting temporarily or permanently by mutual consent.
Amid the recent tension between India and Pakistan, a news of relief has come. Both the countries have decided to ceasefire i.e. stop firing by mutual consent. US President Donald Trump shared this information on his social media handle.
During an IPL match in Dharamsala, the lights were suddenly turned off and the spectators were announced to be evacuated safely. This incident points to how sensitive the situation had become. In such a situation, the question arises – What is the ceasefire? And what does it mean?
What is Ceasefire
The direct meaning of ceasefire is to temporarily stop the fight. This agreement can be between two countries or can also be done with rebel groups. Its purpose is to avoid violence, find the possibility of peace or provide humanitarian aid.
For this, military action between the two countries has been stopped by doing ceasefire. This can be called border ceasefire, because when the conflict between two countries does not reach any conclusion, then in such a situation both the countries make an agreement and agree to keep the ongoing conflict on the border under control for some time. The ceasefire between India and Pakistan is also considered to be something similar.
There Are Two Types Of Ceasefires:
- Formal: Under a written treaty or agreement
- Informal: An unwritten agreement based on mutual understanding
Sometimes ceasefire is also done with the intervention of a third party like the United Nations.
When Is A Ceasefire Necessary?
- The lives of common citizens are in danger
- The fighting is causing heavy damage to both countries
- International pressure increases to maintain peace
However, its purpose is not always peace. Sometimes it is also misused – like to regroup one’s forces or to prepare for an attack.
What Happens After A Ceasefire Is Implemented?
- After a ceasefire is implemented, the ongoing military action between the two countries is temporarily and permanently stopped.
- The two countries agree on the conditions, including time and scope, to end the mutual tension.
- Instructions are given in the military command chain to implement the ceasefire.
- Instructions are given in the military command chain to implement the ceasefire. The Director General Military Operations (DGMO) also plays an important role in implementing the ceasefire.
- A monitoring system can also be put in place to check its complete compliance.
What Happens If The Ceasefire Is broken?
If a country violates the ceasefire, it may have to face many consequences:
- Retaliation: The other country gives a direct military response.
- Diplomatic pressure: That country is criticized at the international level.
- Loss of Trust: The trust in future talks is lost.
- India believes that once the ceasefire is broken, the basis for any further talks becomes weak.
Conclusion
On 10 May, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held a press conference and officially informed that ceasefire between India and Pakistan has been confirmed. However, he also said that the country will remain firm on its tough stand against terrorism. An important discussion will be held again on this matter on 12 May.
